Summit County Public Health Takes Targeted Approach to Vaccinate Minority Communities


Vaccines are becoming more accessible to minority populations as pop-up sites enter their communities.
Ohioans of color are not getting vaccinated at the same rates as other populations. A Kent State University geographer has found mass vaccination locations have not always been convenient for these populations.
Summit County Public Health is moving away from mass vaccination sites by adding vaccine pop-up locations in neighborhoods with dense populations who may not have access to reliable transportation. But Health Commissioner Donna Skoda notes that transportation wasn’t the only barrier these populations were facing.
“What’s interesting to us is that it’s almost like a culture of not leaving their neighborhood,” she said. ....

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Summit County Public Health is canceling its vaccination clinic at the Summit County Fairgrounds on Tuesday, April 27 from 1 to 6 p.m., according to a media release from the organization.
The cancellation is due to decreased demand for the COVID-19 vaccine, the release said.
Those people who have appointments that day will be contacted to reschedule for another clinic being held at the Summit County Public Health officers at 1867 W. Market St. in Akron. ....

Summit County Has Third Highest Rate of COVID-19 Cases in Ohio

Those who have been vaccinated for COVID-19 can still contract and spread the disease as variants continue to circulate and cases spike, says Summit County Health Commissioner Donna Skoda.
Summit County currently has the third highest rate of COVID-19 cases in the state of Ohio. Despite the increasing availability of vaccines, the Summit County Public Health Department still has some concerns. Public Health Commissioner Donna Skoda says while it s doing a good job of getting people vaccinated at the recently opened mass vaccination site at the county fairgrounds, she’s still concerned about community spread.
“Any time you have these spikes in cases, you risk severe disease, Skoda said. And our worry is that we’re seeing these variants circulate, and even though folks may have had COVID previously or may be vaccinated, you can still get disease.” ....
