The mayor of Terrace, B.C., is calling for an ombudsperson s investigation into the conduct of city council following the resignation of its first Indigenous member.
In a written statement posted on Facebook on Monday, Jessica McCallum-Miller said she had felt unheard and/or unsupported by fellow councillors when she put forward ideas about advancing the rights of First Nations since her election to council in 2018. ....

Quebec doctor's death highlights pandemic toll on health workers

Medical leaders are concerned about increasing pressures on health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic following the suicide of Dr. Karine Dion, a 35-year-old emergency physician in Granby, Que.
Described by her loved ones as an incredible woman, Dion had been practising medicine for a decade and was on her second mental health leave when she died. Dion’s husband, David Daigle, says she was exhausted from the stress of the pandemic.
According to Dr. Caroline Gerin-Lajoie, executive vice-president of physician wellness and medical culture at the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), Dion’s tragic death “reminds us that the COVID-19 pandemic continues to take an enormous toll. Our sincere condolences go out to Dr. Karine Dion’s loved ones and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.” ....

The high school freshman had struggled with some anxiety before schools shut down abruptly in March, but in the isolation of the pandemic, cut off from daily interaction with friends and teachers at McCallum High School in Austin, the feelings snowballed.
âI feel stuck in this sort of in between age where Iâm old enough to see current events that Iâm able to understand their impact and have opinions on them, but Iâm unable to really do anything about it,â she said. âItâs a very discouraging feeling and it leaves me feeling pretty hopeless about the future, both my own and that of the world.â ....
