Unions betray Sri Lankan health workers’ strike
An indefinite strike launched on Monday by around 25,000 health workers across Sri Lanka was shut down by the trade unions the next day, without any of their demands being met. The strikers were from more than 15 supplementary medicine and paramedical services, including lab technicians, public health inspectors, midwives, pharmacists, radiographers and therapists.
The Joint Council for Professions of Supplementary Medicine (JCPSM) and the Para Medical Service Front called the strike over 14 demands. These included professional and risk allowances, staff grade positions with a legitimate promotion system and the easing of workloads. The strike was called off after Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi made a hollow promise to submit a “cabinet paper” on the unions’ demands next Monday. ....

As COVID-19 rapidly spreads throughout Sri Lanka, health workers are in an increasingly vulnerable situation. Hundreds of health workers are now in quarantine because of the deadly and highly infectious disease.
On January 8, Ratnapura General Hospital reported that Shantha Stephen had died from COVID-19. He was the first Sri Lankan health worker to die from the virus. More than one hundred employees doctors, nurses and attendants from Peradeniya Teaching Hospital have been sent into quarantine.

In line with the government’s policies, health authorities have compelled health staff to keep working and have refused to shut down the affected wards. As the COVID-19 virus continues to spread unabated, infecting tens of thousands every day throughout California, overwhelming health care systems and completely filling intensive care units (ICUs), hospitals are moving to implement plans to ration care, withholding it from those deemed unlikely to survive the disease.
This disaster is not unpredictable but the outcome of the bipartisan “herd immunity” policy pursued by the ruling class refusing to close non-essential workplaces and schools with full compensation which has allowed the virus to spread unabated, sacrificing hundreds of thousands of lives for corporate profits. ....
