Study finds mechanism leading to herceptin resistance and Rx approach to reverse it

New Orleans, LA - Research conducted by an international team of scientists discovered a mechanism that leads to Herceptin resistance, representing a significant clinical obstacle to successfully treating HER2-positive breast cancer. They also identified a new approach to potentially overcome it. The work is published online in
Nature Communications, available here.
This work attempts to understand why some HER2-positive breast cancer patients do not benefit from treatment with Herceptin, which is a generally effective HER2-targeted therapy, explains Bolin Liu, MD, Professor of Genetics at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine and Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center. ....

NEW ORLEANS Children 12 and older in Louisiana can start getting their COVID-19 vaccines Thursday.  The CDC voted unanimously Wednesday to recommend the Pfizer vaccine to adolescents.
And late Wednesday the Louisiana Department of Health called the safety of this vaccine in teens rock solid and added that vaccinating children is the way back to a normal summer and fall school year. ....

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Prostate cancer is a serious problem in the U.S., including in Louisiana and African Americans are more likely to die from the disease.
Men are uniquely at risk for that type of cancer.
William Robinson founded the Black Men’s Health Initiative after something his father experienced.
“The way I found out about it is that at age 40 my dad who had been partially paralyzed started urinating blood and it was because his prostate had enlarged so much it was squeezing off his urethra,” said Robinson. ....
