County joins pause on J&J vaccines

The state of California and San Mateo County are pausing their distribution of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in line with federal advice that came on Tuesday. Five hundred doses in the county will be temporarily suspended this week.
The pause is the result of an announcement from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration warning that six of the 6.8 million people who have received the vaccine also developed rare blood clots. According to the CDCâs announcement, one of the affected people, women between the ages of 18 and 48, has been hospitalized and another died. There is no evidence right now linking the vaccine to the blood clots, and the recommendation to pause injections is not a federal order. ....

Montara resident Alan Joss and his former co-worker Amy Lighter drove a combined 952 miles to get their COVID-19 vaccines. After a cumulative 10.5 hours in the car together on their way to and from appointments, they got their second Pfizer doses on Sunday at a CVS in Hanford, Calif., a small town in Kings County.
After scouring county, state and private vaccine sites for an appointment anywhere within the Bay Area and coming up short, driving hundreds of miles on two Sundays was their best option.

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Over the past several months, thousands of East Texans have received their COVID-19 vaccine at the NET Health clinic at Harvey Hall in Tyler. And while there are medical professionals and paid staff members helping in the process, unpaid volunteers are also playing a very important role.
“This is about my 7th time here,” said volunteer Shari Koukl.
At Tuesday’s clinic, Koukl helped ensure people completed the necessary paperwork before sending them in the right direction for their inoculation. She’s also become somewhat of an expert at calming nerves. ....
