While studying medicine, I made friends with many nursing students. They had excellent clinical skills and great passion for being becoming nurses. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to work with any of these friends upon graduation and I know many must have faced challenges finding a position in my country’s competitive health care system.  
Addressing competency gaps among nursing students
These personal concerns have since been reinforced by a number of surveys and other initiatives designed to identify gaps among nursing students and develop ways to bridge them. The adult literacy rate is of 60.7%, ranks 181
st out of 189 countries, according to the UN Human Development Index. About 66% of the population lives in rural areas and rely on subsistence farming under rain-fed conditions which are severely affected by the cyclical occurrence of droughts and floods, causing unbalanced food and nutritional income. When I was admitted to medical school 25 years ago, the professors informed us that we would undergo a new medical education program, which had been initiated by the Ministry of Education and Training in Vietnam. The six-year curriculum consisted of both basic and modern health sciences. We spent three years in the classrooms and laboratories before interacting with real patients.  
With this approach, we grew up in “one-way” classrooms, where we daily repeated a boring cycle: listening to a professor, taking his words down in a notebook, and learning them by heart. In the theoretical exams, those who were able to memorize more words received higher scores. While in the practical exams, one’s performance depended on the assessor’s own judgement.
