The Arctic Security Paradox, and What to Do About It

The central question in Arctic regional relations over the last decade has been to what degree developments in the north can be insulated from events and relationships elsewhere. If the goal is to keep the Arctic as a separate, “exceptional” region of cooperation, the Arctic states have managed to do a relatively good job, despite setbacks due to the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014.
The most pressing regional challenge, however, is how to deal with Arctic-specific security concerns, which are often excluded from cooperative forums and venues. As great-power politics has emerged on the agenda in recent years, finding ways to raise security concerns and alleviate pressures perhaps even develop codes of conduct has become more urgent. ....

We leave a dark year behind us.
2020 will be remembered as a year of sickness and death,
of cancelled plans, of lost jobs and uncertainty,
all because of the pandemic.
A new year has now begun. Times are still difficult, but there is a spark of optimism because of the vaccines, like the northern lights when the winter night is at its darkest.
The pandemic is a brutal reminder of two things that are relevant for us in the Arctic countries.
First, the structural vulnerabilities of Arctic communities. Access to health care and digitalisation have proven to be essential for managing life during the pandemic. These two things are a weak point in many parts of the Arctic region. I hope that the pandemic will be a catalyst for new development in those areas. ....

Finlandâs new Arctic policy will be ready in the spring. The policy paper is about to be sent for a public consultation process. With that in mind, this yearâs Arctic Frontiers could not have come at a better moment.

Arctic month kicks off in Estonia

A month of Arctic-related events has been launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of Estonia s bid to become an observer on the Arctic Council.
Estonia is applying for observer status at the Arctic Council in 2021 in order to participate in discussions on the sustainable development of the Arctic at an international forum.
Between January 28 and February 28 several discussions and seminars will take place to raise awareness of the role Estonia can play in the Arctic and why it s running for observer status.
Developments in the Arctic should be a concern for everyone, as the climate change there affects the whole world, Minister of Foreign Affairs Eva-Maria Liimets (Center) said. ....

Today 28 January is the start of the thematic Arctic Month, which aims to engage the Estonian public with various topics related to the Arctic. Over the course of one month, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinates and cooperates with partners and other state institutions to launch a series of Arctic-themed events and articles. The Arctic month is part of Estonia’s bid to become an observer on the Arctic Council.
“Developments in the Arctic should be a concern for everyone, as the climate change there affects the whole world,” Foreign Minister
Eva-Maria Liimets said. “During the Arctic Month, the Foreign Ministry and our excellent partners would like to not only highlight the issues of the Arctic but also offer our expertise to come up with long-term solutions.
