Travel: Is the road to Carrick worth taking?

Carrickfergus Castle is a spectacular proper castle and well worth a visit. Picture by Mal McCann
UNLIKE as in the song, I have never wished to be in Carrickfergus. Not even for one night. But that s exactly where I ended up for a two day mini-break.
In fairness, the beautiful lilting ballad known as
Carrickfergus is unlikely to have had anything to do with the Co Antrim town. It s more likely to have found its roots in Munster, not Ulster.
That said, Carrickfergus comes with some remarkable historical pedigree and awesome views. Though the profligate and prominent amount of political graffiti makes it seem more like Shankill by the sea. ....

Northern Ireland's castles: Towers, turrets and tales of yore

Dunluce Castle, Co Antrim
Perched on top of a high cliff, the majestic ruins of Dunluce Castle are arguably the most picturesque in Northern Ireland.
Although Richard Óg de Burgh, second Earl of Ulster, built a castle on the site in the 13th century, Dunluce Castle as we know it was erected in the 1500s by the Scottish McQuillan clan - hired mercenaries who settled in Ireland in the 13th century.
After the Battle of Orla in 1565, Dunluce was seized by fellow Scottish immigrants the MacDonnell clan, led by famous warrior chieftain, Sorley Boy MacDonnell. During the following 100 years, Dunluce was a place of violence, intrigue and rebellion and the castle was the scene of many battles, mostly due to assaults by the English. ....

Why Executive Covid briefings have been moved from Stormont to Dungannon landmark

They have been part of evening news bulletins for almost a year - but regular viewers of the Stormont media briefings have noticed a big change this week.
Arlene Foster and Michelle O Neill have taken their press conferences on tour, swapping Stormont Castle for a hill overlooking Dungannon.
The familiar blue Executive-branded backdrop has been replaced by sweeping views from high above the Tyrone town, including the towering spire of St Patrick s Church.
It is understood the Executive decided to move press conferences from Belfast temporarily so ministers can work from home where possible in line with the guidelines, but the situation is being reviewed on a day-to-day basis. ....
