At the ripe old age of 36, Ghetts (the east London MC Justin Clarke) has been a fixture of the capital’s rap scene since practically “the dawn of grime”, said Alexis Petridis in The Guardian. From his first mixtape in 2005, he has won “constant acclaim” from critics, and the approbation of his peers, while shifting his style from “raging aggression” to something more insouciant and conversational. This third album is his first for a major label, and with its “unusual, beautiful arrangements” – even a string and brass section – and “brilliant, sodium-lit melancholy”, it should propel Ghetts “into the big time”.

John Georgiadis: played in orchestras football matches
John Georgiadis, who has died aged 81, was twice leader of the London Symphony Orchestra, serving under the batons of André Previn and Claudio Abbado; a fine violinist, he was also an outspoken one with forthright views on conductors, and his return to the LSO prompted George Szell to observe: “I hope you behave yourself this time.”

This enterprising album of English music for strings from the 1930s embraces some of the finest string playing ever put on disc by a British orchestra.
Listening to the final fugue from Benjamin Britten’s Variations On A Theme Of Frank Bridge, played at the speed the composer noted in the score, is an exhilarating experience and perhaps explains why, 30 years later, Britten’s own recording is much slower; more likely to be a technical decision based on what his orchestra could manage than an artistic one.
In this work, commissioned by the English conductor Boyd Neel for a 1937 Salzburg Festival concert, the 23-year-old Britten revealed the genius that was to take him to the very pinnacle of his profession.
