On this week’s show, we meet female leaders across Africa. Women across the African continent are often portrayed as oppressed, poor or victims of conflict and violence.
But this one-sided view overlooks the increasing number of women who are shaping politics across many African countries. And there are many examples to be found.
Many of these women put themselves in harm’s way to fight for equality and participation on the continent. Even death threats or being forced to flee their homes won t stop them.
Reporters Antje Diekhans and Dunja Sadaqi spoke with women across a number of countries. Their report is presented by Ineke Mules. ....

Rights activists object to choice of NHRC chief A.K. Mishra

‘Move that smacks of brazen arrogance’
A group of human rights activists on Wednesday raised concerns over the appointment of former Supreme Court judge, Justice Arun Kumar Mishra, as the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The Centre’s decision “smacks of brazen arrogance and indifference to public opinion and once again highlights the cynical disdain of the government for democratic norms and constitutional proprieties”.
The activists pointed out that the selection of Justice Mishra by a committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was despite the objection of another committee member, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge. The Congress leader had suggested appointing someone from Dalit, Adivasi or minority communities, “considering that the bulk of victims of state abuse comes from these communities”. ....

Central Government should clarify about the Black fungus epidemic - 1. What is being done for Amphotericin B drug shortage? 2. What is the procedure for getting this medicine to the patient? 3. Instead of giving treatment, why is the public getting bogged down in formalities by the government? he posted on his Twitter page.
The Congress MP has previously also attacked the BJP government and blamed the inefficiency of the PM Narendra Modi government for the epidemic of black fungus along with the Covid pandemic in the country. ....
