Volusia County's new surge in development raising concerns

DAYTONA BEACH Less than a decade ago, the local economy here was still in the grips of the Great Recession with real estate development activity practically at a standstill. New development was largely viewed as a sign of hope and optimism.
Not anymore.
Today, a flurry of new home construction, apartment projects and commercial development throughout Volusia County has some citizens and elected officials alarmed that area is quickly becoming over-developed.
Volusia County Chair Jeff Brower is one of them.
The flood gates have come open, said Brower while standing on a grassy field along LPGA Boulevard that is set to become the site of a retail center called Tymber Creek Village. Riverside Conservancy has grant to restore Indian River shorelines

Researchers have linked the disappearance of seagrass in Florida (thought to be behind this winter’s explosion of manatee deaths in the Indian River Lagoon) to a decades-long decline in water quality. But those working to restore the estuary in Volusia County hope living shorelines can help reverse the trend.
We want to be at the cutting edge of what’s going on in shoreline restoration, said Greg Wilson, chief scientific officer for the Edgewater-based Riverside Conservancy.
Living shorelines are designed to replicate the natural layout of an estuary, before homes were built and seawalls routinely installed. Walking from the backyard to the Indian River Lagoon, homeowners would first encounter a row of mangroves, then an intertidal zone where clams are submerged, and an oyster reef beyond that breaks the wave action. ....

County Approves Almost $1 Million Loop Land Purchase

Ormond Beach, FL - It was originally slated for the development of 76 new homes but now a plot of land in the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail will be preserved, thanks to the efforts of a local grass-roots organization. The Volusia County Council made the unanimous decision Tuesday (April 20) to buy the 36-acres of land from local land developer Parker Mynchenberg after nearly 40 minutes of comments from the public. Council was presented with a proposal to buy the land for $988,000, which is well below the original asking price of $1.37 million. Among those watching the vote were members of Dream Green Volusia, a group that was instrumental in helping convince Mynchenberg to sell the plot of land that fronts the west side of Old Dixie Highway in Ormond Beach, just north of the entrance to the Plantation Oaks subdivision.
