University Of Rhode Island: URI's 135th Commencement: By The Numbers

KINGSTON, R.I. May 13, 2021 The University of Rhode Island will confer 4,438 degrees (689 graduate and 3,749 undergraduate) academic degrees upon 4,093 students at the University s commencement ceremonies during the weekend of May 21 through 23. The number of degrees conferred is greater than the number of graduates because many students earn more than one degree.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there will
not be a large undergraduate commencement on the quadrangle or a large graduate commencement at the Ryan Center.

Instead, all nine college ceremonies will be held at Meade Stadium, home of URI football. Students are allowed to invite two guests. The in-person ceremonies, which will include brief remarks by the respective college deans and ceremonial traditions conducted by President David M. Dooley and Provost Donald H. KINGSTON, R.I.–April 19, 2021 Meade Stadium, home to University of Rhode Island football, will play a starring role, and the show couldn t go on without URI Health Services. The Inner Space Center at URI s Graduate School of Oceanography will play a critical supporting role and so will the Custodial Services team.
As it has for the last year and a half during the COVID-19 pandemic, the University is relying on its ingenuity, expertise and teamwork to give the class of 2021 memorable, in-person commencement ceremonies that start Friday, May 21, and end Sunday, May 23, at Meade Stadium.

All participating graduates will dress in traditional regalia, have their names announced, cross the stage and have professional photographs taken. To maintain the health and safety of the URI community, in-person celebrations will be limited to graduates only. ....

Student head counts factor into public school funding, and a 2% drop nationally in K-12 enrollment during the pandemic is a budget red flag that districts are watching carefully.
It’s a looming “crisis,” says Marguerite Roza, director of Edunomics Lab at Georgetown University. If missing students never return, “the system is going to have to figure out how to adjust on lower dollars.”
