Pandemic spurs increase in depression among college students

It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a sudden spike in the need for mental health services.
Reports suggest depression has tripled among U.S. adults since the outbreak began, and that appears to be especially true for college students.
A Boston University survey of almost 33,000 college students found that more than 10% had thoughts of suicide in the last year; 39% reported being depressed.
An article about the study by the Brink, a publication covering research at Boston University, attributed the increase to stress factors that included the COVID-19 pandemic, political unrest and systemic racism and inequality.
Additionally, 83% of students said their emotional and mental difficulties had impacted their academic performance over the prior four weeks, and 76% said their depression had made it at least somewhat difficult to do work, take care of things at home or get along with other people. ....

Teton County human service groups face revenue cuts

The humanity of a civilization or community can best be judged by how we treat the most vulnerable among us. Fortunately, in Jackson Hole we have 10 nonprofit organizations that do a great job meeting these needs in our community.
Unfortunately, severe cuts to state budgets threaten much of their work. These 10 groups work “to ensure that urgent, core and essential services are unified, available, and accessible to vulnerable, at-risk and in-crisis community members in Teton County.”
They do so in an admirably coordinated fashion that ensures that the federal, state and private money we give them is used well.
There is also a lot of evidence that these groups are well managed and governed. The average tenure of the groups’ leaders is well over 10 years. Some staff have been with their organizations for 20, 30 and even 40 years. This longevity of service speaks well of governance stability and the supportive culture of their organizations. This also indic ....

Google advised its employees to go for mental health counselling or apply leave when they complained about racism or sexual harassment at workplace, the media reported.
According to NBC News, Google s human resources (HR) department encouraged them to take mental health leave, even when their complaints were unrelated to such concerns.
They consulted human resources after colleagues made comments about their skin colour or Black hairstyles or asked if they were sexually interested in their teammates. They also contacted human resources to report retaliation after protesting sexual harassment issues and to advocate for raises for Black people to match white employees pay, the report said on Sunday. ....

Specialist trauma mental health services a necessity for UK healthcare staff after COVID

 E-Mail
Almost 60% of UK frontline health and social care workers (HSCWs) experienced a mental health disorder during the first COVID-19 lockdown, with many of those surveyed suffering very high rates of distress , suggests a new study led by researchers at UCL and the University of Haifa, Israel.
Given the significantly high levels of mental health disorders across all HSCWs, the researchers believe the sector could be on the verge of a mental health crisis , and are now calling for long-term planning to meet the needs of the staff, such as specialist trauma services, similar to the NHS psychological trauma provisions for military veterans. ....
