Of ik ook een glas wijn wilde? Hoofdschuddend sloeg ik het aanbod af en wees naar mijn zwangere buik. Helaas. Maar dan mag je toch wel wat drinken? , vroeg de kennis, een man met medische achtergrond noch eigen kinderen.
Tot mijn grote ergernis bleef hij aandringen. Maar hoe ergerlijk ook, zijn onvervalste staaltje mansplaining bleef hangen. Die avond googelde ik naar de effecten van alcohol op ongeboren kinderen. Dat je als zwangere beter niet kan drinken, wist ik. Maar wat is er nou eigenlijk zo gevaarlijk aan?
Waar ik die avond ook achter kwam: nergens ter wereld komt FAS zo veel voor als in Zuid-Afrika ....

Every year between 800 and 8,000 babies are born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. It s a preventable statistic, and one health experts are worried it will increase due to COVID-19.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, it s one condition that is under the umbrella of Fetal Alcohol Disorders. These are disorders that affect the physical, psychological, and behavioral side of a kid through adulthood. These syndromes are with them for life, said Dr. Rachel Rube, Family Medicine Faculty Physician.
It s a lifelong battle that happens when a mother consumes any amount of alcohol during her pregnancy. ....
