As if family trips to the snow aren’t difficult enough!
All of the gear, the risk of bad weather, getting kids to and from ski school on time, and planning meals.
Having raised three snow-loving kids, I can honestly say there is no vacation that is more labor intensive, or rewarding, than a trip to the snow. That first time your 7-year-old beats you down the slope, the talks with your teen on the lifts that there never seems to be time for at home, watching your kids build self-confidence mastering new skills. And then there is the day they no longer want to ski with you because you are “too slow!” ....

Nothing would keep the Tointighs off the slopes.
Not the difficulty of making reservations when and where they wanted; not the longer lines for rentals and lifts; not the lack of indoor eateries on the mountain. Not wearing masks everywhere.
“It’s about the memories and the experience,” said Keli Tointigh, a mother of five from Chickasa, Oklahoma. “Shame on us if we missed a year.”

The Ups and Downs of My Interlodge Ski Saga

Picture a canyon that’s so steep and narrow and gets so much snow that avalanches can come cascading down the mountain and cover parking lots, roadways, and even buildings. That’s what can and does happen in Utah’s Little Cottonwood Canyon, the steep, narrow gorge home to the Alta and Snowbird ski areas. The canyon sees an average of 545 inches of snow each year and is one of the most active avalanche zones in the country, with 64 different slide paths.

Last week a series of massive storms dumped 96 inches on Alta and 88 inches on neighboring Snowbird over a handful of days. The storm shut down Little Cottonwood Canyon for a record-breaking 60-hour interlodge, an event in which everyone in the canyon except critical workers are required to stay indoors due to the high avalanche danger.  ....

The deals have never been better.
Whether you want to hit the slopes in Colorado, get your theme park fix in Orlando, or laze in the giant pool overlooking the ocean at an all-inclusive in Mexico or the Caribbean, you’ve got plenty of affordable options as long as you are comfortable traveling right now.
Resorts, hotels and airlines have worked hard to implement COVID-19 protocols to keep you safe extra cleaning, social distancing, touch-free check-in, additional takeout options, reduced capacity, among them. And they continue to operate with relaxed cancel and change fees, though vacation rentals may not be as lenient. That’s why it is important to read the fine print before you fork over that credit card. ....
