P.G.T. Beauregard | Confederate general

Beauregard graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York (1838), and served in the Mexican-American War (1846–48) under the command of Winfield Scott. After the secession of Louisiana from the Union (January 1861), Beauregard resigned from the U.S. Army and was commissioned a brigadier general in the Confederate army; he eventually became one of the eight full generals of the Confederacy and participated in almost every important theatre of the war. He commanded the forces that bombarded Fort Sumter, South Carolina, was on the field at the First Battle of Bull Run (1861), and assumed command at Shiloh after the death of General Albert Sidney Johnston (1862). He later conducted the defense of Charleston and toward the end of the war defended the southern approaches to Richmond. Though he proved to be a capable combat commander and often displayed sound strategic sense, Beauregard revealed serious deficiencies as a general officer. His penchant for questioning o ....

Bill by State Rep. Anchía Would Remove Confederate Monuments from Texas Capitol

“The Texas Capitol is a symbol of solidarity, as lawmakers from various backgrounds and perspectives come together to create change for our communities,” Anchía said. “The presence of Confederate memorials on the Capitol grounds undermine the unifying work that lawmakers strive to undertake.”
Following last summer’s Black Lives Matter protests, Anchía and DeSoto state Rep. Carl Sherman joined six other Democratic state lawmakers also demanding the monuments’ removal.
If passed, Anchía’s bill would remove the following:

A COVID-Free Look Back at the Top Stories in 2020

The Leaning Tower of Dallas was born on Feb. 16 when the planned implosion of the former Affiliated Computer Services building didn t fully collapse upon detonation. When the dust settled the building s core, containing the stairwell and elevator shaft, remained upright at an angle. For the next two weeks, people traveled from near and far to take whimsical photographs with the tower in the background. The building finally collapsed in a cloud of dust on March 2 after two weeks of being whacked with a 5,600-pound wrecking ball.

The Hawkins Boys: Goodbye 1863, hello 1864

The last days of 1863 found the men from Hawkins County regrouping in Dalton, Georgia. They begin building huts on the side of a ridge west of the town for winter quarters. The men needed this seasonal break to heal and rebuild their numbers.
The battles of Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge had taken their toll. The 19th Tennessee only had roughly 100 men who were fit for duty. In fact, Gen. Otho Stralh’s entire brigade, which included the Hawkins Boys, was in bad shape.
To put it in more personal terms, Gen. Stralh put in a request for shoes for his brigade. At the start of the war, that would have been 5,500 pairs of shoes. In January of 1864, the general requested only 325. ....

Season of 'madness': How University of Texas song became racial flash point

When the familiar notes of “The Eyes of Texas” started to play from the speakers at the corner of the bar’s outdoor patio, conversations quieted and people began to sing.
Some were wearing matching T-shirts they had received upon entry to the bar, meant to signal their support for the song now washing over the students and alumni gathered to watch that Saturday’s football game.
It was one of many times that spectators at Cain and Abel s in West Campus would hear the University of Texas’ alma mater play during the game, and in any other year, the display would be perfectly normal. ....
