Christiane Nusslein-Volhard is a German geneticist, who was the co-recipient of the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research on the mechanisms of early embryonic development.
Christiane Nusslein-Volhard was born in Heyrothsberge, Germany, in 1942. Christiane studied biology at Goethe University in Frankfurt and biochemistry at Eberhard-Karl University, Tubingen, before undertaking graduate studies at the Max Planck Institute.
Upon completing her PhD in genetics in 1973, Chritiane joined the University of Basel. There she undertook gene study on Drosophila, or fruit flies, an important model organism in genetics. In 1978, she joined the E ....

Inside the new mRNA vaccines for COVID-19

Inside the new mRNA vaccines for COVID-19
How the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines work to prime the human immune system to fight SARS-CoV-2
By Jim Fessenden
December 18, 2020
Health care workers across the nation this week are the first Americans to receive the new mRNA vaccine by Pfizer/BioNTech to protect against COVID-19, and the Moderna vaccine appears soon to follow, with emergency approval by the Food and Drug Administration possible any day. The new mRNA vaccines are the first of their kind and researchers at UMass Medical School are among the leading RNA biologists in the world. The Medical School is home to the ....

UMMS study shows how novel mechanism in P. aeruginosa bacteria disables ribosome

UMMS study shows how novel mechanism in P. aeruginosa bacteria disables ribosome
Understanding of biological process could lead to potential therapeutic for disabling protein synthesis in tumor cells
By Jim Fessenden
December 11, 2020
A new study by Alejandro Vasquez-Rifo, PhD, and Victor Ambros, PhD, shows that certain strains of
Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a rod-shaped bacterial pathogen that causes disease in plants and animals, including humans, have a unique mechanism for disabling and degrading the ribosome in its host cells. The study, published in
PLOS Biology, points to a mechanism that may be harnessed by scientists in the lab or by clinicians to target tumor cells or perhaps even block the mechanisms that make certain pathogens virulent. ....
