FIS say Russian team to compete as Russian Ski Federation at World Championships

The International Ski Federation (FIS) has confirmed the Russian team participating at upcoming World Championships will be referred to as the Russian Ski Federation (RSF).
The FIS Council approved the measure during an online meeting this week.
International Federations have had to implement measures after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld sanctions imposed on Russia by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in December.
The CAS halved the sanction period from four years to two, but Russia must compete as neutrals at World Championships and the Olympic Games.
Federations must now regard them as neutral teams, separate from the Russia name. ....

Whitecaps game postponed, Riveters season over following COVID-19 concerns

The Minnesota Whitecaps game against the Connecticut Whale and one other NWHL game on Thursday night the Buffalo Beauts vs. the Toronto Six were postponed out of an abundance of caution when the Metropolitan Riveters were forced to withdraw from the 2021 NWHL season after several members of the organization tested positive for COVID-19.
The decision to withdraw the Riveters (2-1) from competition follows the NWHL s medical protocols established for this season.
The season will proceed with five teams, an NWHL statement said, and the league will continue to strictly adhere to the medical protocols to protect everyone s safety. ....

Schwarz seeks to build slalom lead in Alpine Ski World Cup Chamonix doubleheader

Marco Schwarz of Austria will seek to retain his lead in the overall slalom standings in this season’s Alpine Ski World Cup when a weekend of competition starts tomorrow on the slopes of Chamonix.
For three-time world gold medallist Schwarz and his rivals this will be the last opportunity to compete before the International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine World Ski Championships, which are set to be held in Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy from February 9 to 21.
On Tuesday (January 26), the 25-year-old from Villach, who won team silver at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics, secured his second FIS Alpine Ski World Cup victory of the season at the famous night slalom on home snow at Schladming. ....

Sheika Gramshammer named 2021 Vail Valley Citizen of the Year

For her dynamic and selfless contributions to the community, Sheika Gramshammer has been named the 2021 Vail Valley Citizen of the Year. The honor has been handed out since 1981 to deserving citizens who have provided broad support, vision, and leadership to the betterment of the community and its many nonprofit organizations.
Gramshammer was a co-recipient of the award with her husband Pepi in 1989, the year that she and her husband helped play an instrumental role in bringing the first of three Alpine World Ski Championships to Vail and Beaver Creek. In 1989, however, Sheika was just getting started. Since then she has provided philanthropic vision and community spirit enough for two lifetimes. ....
