One of Asia’s most prominent art exhibitions, the Gwangju Biennale – originally slated for 2020, but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic – opened its 13th edition exploring the limits of individual cognition and the transcendent possibilities of what co-curators Defne Ayas and Natasha Ginwala define in their mission statement as ‘the extended mind’. Titled ‘Minds Rising, Spirits Tuning’, this iteration includes works by 69 artists across four venues, a series of site-specific commissions around the city, and a digital programme of podcasts, videos and online publications. ....

The coronavirus pandemic has changed so much of people s lives and the ways things are done. The Gwangju Biennale is no exception.
The Biennale, one of the largest art events in Asia, has had its fair share of challenges in bringing the much-anticipated show to art lovers.
The exhibition got pushed back twice ― from last September to this February, and then to this April ― and the organizers had to arrange and install most of the artworks without having the international artists present in Korea. ....

Angelo Plessas was doing plank pose in the narrow space between the foot of his bed and the hotel wall. Several of his quilted sculptures were spread out beneath him to soften the hard floor. Hotel staff dropped off warm meals several times a day.
“It is sort of like a residency,” the Greek artist told me over a WhatsApp call on day seven of his 14-day quarantine in an 18-square-meter room in Seoul. (The artist had been uploading the footage to Instagram as a kind of performative ritual.) Following his stay, Plessas planned to head to a sacred mountain to meet the South Korean shaman Dodam, with whom he is collaborating for the 13th Gwangju Biennial. ....

1 Public museums closed for half year
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) is currently on hiatus upon guidelines from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism that have forced the shutdown of state-run museums as a precautionary measure against COVID-19.
In fact, the museum s Seoul and Deoksu Palace branches have been closed for over 170 days this year, repeatedly opening and closing doors in accordance with the spikes and declines of the number of COVID-19 cases. ....
