Derek Chauvin verdict: Ashland, Wooster react to conviction


In the shadow of the Wayne County Courthouse, a handful of Black Lives Matter supporters gathered on Wooster square to celebrate justice in the death of George Floyd.
Roughly 25 miles to the northwest, another half dozen people came together just outside Corner Park along West Main Street in Ashland. 
The simultaneous gatherings happened Tuesday, about an hour after the jury delivered its guilty verdict in the murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.
The small crowds met on their respective squares holding signs and demonstrating their continued support for those facing civil rights injustices in America.
In Wooster, passing cars honked their horns, affirming the jury s decision - guilty on all counts. It s a good day! , one passerby yelled from his car window as he drove by. ....

Couple Donates Largest One-Time Gift To Ashland University

ASHLAND, Ohio Bob Archer does not come from wealth and he’s the first to admit that.
Even though he was the valedictorian of his class at Uhrichsville High School, Archer’s parents had little money, certainly not enough to afford to send their son to college.
Then came the Case Institute of Technology – and a scholarship to pay for it.
“If I had not received that scholarship,” said Archer, “I wouldn’t be here today.”
“Here” is in Ashland, where he lives with his wife, Jan (also a high school valedictorian). The couple moved to the city with their children in the mid-1970s in order for Bob to take a position with Brown Group/Eagle Rubber/Kent. Jan, who earned a degree in church music from Baldwin-Wallace College, eventually went on to receive a Master’s degree in health and social services planning from the University of Akron and took a position leading the United Way of Ashland County and later Leadership Ashland, among her ....
