Dallas Mavericks provide $1.25 million in emergency relief grants after severe winter storms
The Dallas Mavericks are once again stepping up to help those in need.

After a week of devastation, including power and water outages for millions, from record-setting sever cold weather in Texas, the Dallas Mavericks are stepping in to help. Luka Doncic, Tim Hardaway Jr., Maxi Kleber, Dwight Powell, owner Mark Cuban, and CEO Cynt Marshall worked with the Mavs Foundation and jersey partner Chime to donate over $1.25 million in emergency relief grants.
Specifically, the money will to toward Dallas-area organizations to help pay for emergency and homeless shelters, facilities costs, meals, and transportation. This includes the Kay Baily Hutcheson Convention Center that both serves as a warming center as well as homeless housing in cooperation with OurCalling, Austin Street Shelter, and the Stewpot. ....

Dallas plans to sweep Camp Rhonda, a symbol of houseless organizing

The city of Dallas threatened a local unhoused encampment with displacement and destruction of personal property on Wednesday, January 27th. This encampment, near the Austin Street Shelter, is named Camp Rhonda after a beloved community member who tragically passed.
The camp has grown because of the involvement and leadership of several houseless individuals, including Rhonda, in coordination with groups like Diaspora United, Dallas Stops Evictions and several other organizations. This development began during the summer of 2020 uprisings against racism, when participants in the struggle recognized the necessity of sustained organizing.
Over the last few months, Camp Rhonda has become a vital distribution point for resources and donations to dozens of people in desperate need of support. The destruction of the camp would mean the loss of a critically needed central location where food, clothing, laundry and health screenings are all available. ....

North Texas Man Launches Sleeping Bag Drive and Gets Over 1,000

Over in Denton County, Texas, Chris Bailey once again but on his sleeping bag drive. He has been donating sleeping bags to homeless shelters throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area for five years now. Chris asks people to donate a high quality sleeping bag and you can ship it straight to his door.
Chris recommends ordering a Coleman sleeping bag for $35 because those ones are rated for as low as 20 degree weather. Every year in Dallas-Fort Worth, multiple homeless folks literally freeze to death., and a sleeping bag can literally save a life, said Chris Bailey, the organizer of the sleeping bag drive. He started the drive the day after Christmas this year and so far has around 1,200 sleeping bags. Last year he got 769 bags and it looks like he may double his efforts this year. ....
