Gas pipeline owners in Australia are intently scrutinising the devastating ransomware attack that brought the United States’ biggest pipelines for petrol and diesel to a near-week-long standstill, with the intention of beefing up their already extensive cyber-security precautions and improving “plan B”-type fall-back measures.
Pipeline industry sources say operators already have extensive back-up measures and redundancies in place to try to ensure supply is maintained in the event of a cyber-attack, given the risk to critical infrastructure from malicious actors has been evident for many years. ....

DNV to Help Australia Decarbonise Gas Networks
DNV on March 11 said it is helping Energy Networks Australia (ENA) to enable the blending of renewable and decarbonised gases into latter’s networks by 2030, and de-risk conversion of the networks to 100% renewable and decarbonised gas by 2050.
DNV and ENA, the national industry body representing Australia’s electricity transmission and distribution and gas distribution networks, have started work to develop ‘A National Plan for Decarbonising Gas Networks’. It is co-funded by the Australian Pipelines and Gas Association (APGA), the body representing Australasia’s pipeline infrastructure.  ....

DNV is supporting Energy Networks Australia’s (ENA) demonstration on how it will enable the blending of renewable and decarbonised gases into its networks by 2030, and de-risk conversion of the networks to 100% renewable and decarbonised gas by 2050.
DNV, the independent energy expert and assurance provider, has already begun its work in support of ENA, the national industry body representing Australia’s electricity transmission and distribution and gas distribution networks, to develop ‘A National Plan for Decarbonising Gas Networks’. Co-funded by Australian Pipelines and Gas Association (APGA), the peak body representing Australasia’s pipeline infrastructure.
The project has kicked off and will run to June 2021, with three main targets that are aligned with ENA’s Gas Vision 2050: ....

The federal government is spending millions of dollars on consultants to advise on how to subsidise the multi-billion-dollar gas industry, despite it employing just 0.2 per cent of the Australian workforce, according to tender documents and ABC sources.
Key points:
Tender documents show the federal government allocated more than $9 million to pay for private consultants
A request to see the specific terms of the contracts with BCG was denied, despite the AusTender website listing them as not confidential ....

The ever-shrinking role of gas in Australia's power system

5 March 2021
There’s a lot riding on predictions of the future, when it comes to climate. In Australia, the future of coal is mostly a debate about whether its demise is fast, or slow. For the country’s gas-fired power generation, the debate is slightly more complicated.
The government, for instance, believes that Australia ought to be building new gas-fired power stations, in order to buttress grid reliability and “affordability”. 1,000 megawatts of new gas in the Hunter Valley is erroneously justified on the grounds that it is “required” to ensure reliable provision of electricity. This view is supported by Australia’s Labor party, with their draft policy platform declaring that “Labor recognises that gas-power generation has a critical role to play in firming the National Electricity Market (NEM) to ensure reliability and price affordability as it transitions to net zero emissions and as other technologies emerge”. ....
