Willoughby: Easter has a broader meaning to Aspen

Easter has its religious roots and in addition there are non-religious traditions like Easter egg hunts and school and college vacations. Aspen created a few more local interpretations.
As a tourist town Aspen’s calendar is marked by seasons, not summer and winter but ski season and trout time. Once the Aspen Skiing Company opened for business it had to have a closing date, Easter was a convenient and logical one although complicated because Easter is not always at the same time each year. Snow conditions were not relevant as there is ample snow after Easter, often some of the largest storms come after. ....

Willoughby: Ski fashion of the 1930s — more practical than pretty

Ski clothes from 1939 advertised in Ski Illustrated
If you are shopping for a new ski outfit as a present for Christmas, you are not likely to find the White Stag outfit in the accompanying photo in local stores nor anything remotely resembling it. Skiwear’s first priority in the 1930s was practical, to keep you dry.
The White Stag brand had an interesting origin. The Portland company’s predecessor was a manufacturer of clothing and tents for lumberjacks and outdoor workers. The owners, the Hirsch brothers, for the first few decades of the 1900s, focused on products that withstood Pacific Northwest rain. ....

As a native of Aspen and from a family whose ancestors were some of the first miners to come over Independence Pass, David E. Stapleton had a legacy to follow. He had no trouble doing that, and even elevated it for generations to come.
Stapleton died Thursday afternoon from complications due to COVID-19, his sons said. He was 86.
After decades of service to the Aspen community, the country with his time in the Army and for local and World Cup ski racers, Stapleton was honored through the years with inductions to halls of fame for his tireless work and the ways he helped shape Aspen and the international ski scene. ....

Aspen History: Honoring an Olympian

Courtesy Aspen Historical Society
“Rip’s Run dedicated on Aspen Mt.,” announced the Aspen Times on December 8, 1983. “Rip’s Run on Aspen Mountain was formally dedicated Saturday in the memory of ski racer Rip McManus, a member of the 1964 US Olympic Team. McManus, a familiar Aspen figure who spent much of his time here ever since he spent a winter living and training in Aspen as a member of the US Ski Team, died a year ago in a car accident on the East Coast. Saturday’s ceremony marked the renaming of Midnight Cutoff (which runs from the bottom of Dipsy Doodle) in McManus’ memory. The two-week string of cold snowy weather broke briefly and the sun shone as a crowd of more than 200 people listened to brief speeches from Ski Magazine publisher George Bauer and Aspen Ski Club president John Keleher.” This image shows seven former Olympic ski racers who turned out to honor Rip McManus.
