Three earthquakes woke many across the Los Angeles area before sunrise Monday.
The first, a magnitude 3.3 quake, struck at 4:15 a.m. near Inglewood, a city in southwest Los Angeles County, according to the United States Geological Survey. This was quickly followed by a very small magnitude 2.5 aftershock near to where the initial quake struck. A larger magnitude 4.0 temblor hit at 4:44 a.m. in the same area.
The epicenters were about nine miles south of Los Angeles.
While there were no reports of any damage, the quakes were widely felt and nearly 5,000 people reported feeling the magnitude 4.0 shaker to the USGS. ....

San Francisco schools, already facing fiscal challenges, an ongoing pandemic and a city-led lawsuit, now will have to grapple with an imminent vacancy in the district’s top job with the departure of Superintendent Vince Matthews in June.
Matthews announced Wednesday that he will retire at the end of the school year.
His departure follows a brutal couple of years of controversies and public backlash in the district, including rallies over reopening, protests against the renaming of schools, fights over admission to Lowell High School and months-long negotiations with labor unions over pending in-person instruction. The news comes just after a tentative deal was reached for some students to return starting April ....

California’s push to phase out gas-powered cars has often focused on the future of battery-electric models. But a rival technology still in its infancy, hydrogen fuel-cell electric cars, could be a key part of the solution. California has until 2035 to meet Gov. Gavin Newsom?s order to end the sale of gas cars. According to a report from the state Air Resources Board, the charging infrastructure for fuel-cell cars could become self-sufficient in about a decade. Ogitsu has driven a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle since 2017. He said he chose a hydrogen model over a battery-electric car because it can refuel quickly and has a longer range, so he can make weekend road trips ....
