Letter to the Editor: Inglewood Unified's missing COVID-19 funds


Dear 2UrbanGirls,
I have been keeping up with your coverage of the ongoing issues within Inglewood Unified.  I am an employee and wanted to bring something to your attention.
Employees continue to complain about not being paid COVID pay for working through the pandemic.  To my understanding, the district used close to $100,000 towards the graduation ceremonies at SoFi stadium.  Why do we have to pay?  It was free for the ceremonies to be held at The Forum because of the free days the city got under the community benefits agreement.
What community benefits do Inglewood students get under the SoFi deal? ....

Black pupils in 14 L.A. school districts face equity barriers

Black students in Los Angeles County continue to face a multitude of barriers to an equitable education, including concentrated poverty, high suspension rates and housing insecurity, a UCLA report released Wednesday found.
Researchers focused on 14 school districts in the county that serve at least 800 Black students to understand how various factors are leaving behind Black children, particularly those considered vulnerable. The report by the UCLA Center for the Transformation of Schools builds on a previous study that found schools serving Black students lacked critical resources counselors, nurses, social workers, highly qualified teachers and students’ home and community environment played a role in their academic success. ....

School reopening: Why some parents reject COVID return

Katy Meza knows full well the pain distance learning is causing her son Matthew. The third-grader struggles with isolation, gets frustrated sitting in front of the computer for hours and is stalling academically.
Still, Meza says she’s not prepared for him to return any time soon to in-person schooling at Bryson Elementary School in South Gate.
Almost every family she knows has someone who has fallen ill with COVID-19. Her neighbor died of the disease, and his wife was hospitalized. And Meza has no confidence that her son’s school which before the pandemic often lacked toilet paper and soap can keep him safe or prevent him from becoming infected with the virus and bringing it home to his grandparents. ....
