UK Seeks Comments on Role of Biomass in Achieving Net-Zero Goal – Advanced BioFuels USA

by Erin Voegele (Biomass Magazine) The U.K. Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy on April 20 opened a public consultation seeking evidence on how sustainable biomass should be sourced and used to support the country’s net-zero target. Comments filed during the consultation period will inform the development of the U.K.’s upcoming biomass strategy.
According to the BEIS, information provided by stakeholders will support a review of the amount of sustainable biomass available to the U.K., and how the resource can be best utilized across the economy and in different end uses, considering existing and future demand, to support the U.K.’s net-zero target. Evidence gathered during the consultation will also inform an assessment of the country’s current biomass sustainability standards. ....

UK white paper says BECCS, RNG will help meet net zero goal

The U.K. government on Dec. 14 published a white paper that describes how the country will clean up its energy system and reach net zero emissions by 2050. Bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS) and renewable natural gas (RNG) will play an integral role in reaching that goal.
According to the white paper, the ability of BECCS to deliver negative emissions makes biomass one of the U.K.’s most valuable tools to reaching net zero emissions. The white paper confirms that the U.K. government plans to publish a new Biomass Strategy in 2022 that will describe how the renewable resource can best be utilized to help the U.K. reach its net zero goals. As part of that effort, the government said it will soon issue a call for evidence on “Biomass for net zero” to inform the development of its biomass strategy. A preliminary position paper is expected to be released in mid-2021. ....

CCC's Sixth Carbon Budget shows BECCS needed to achieve net zero

The U.K. Climate Change Committee on Dec. 9 released its Sixth Carbon Budget, which provides guidance on the volume of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions the U.K. can emit from 2033-2037 to achieve its net-zero goals.
According to the CCC, emissions must fall by almost 80 percent by 2035 when compared to 1990 levels in order for the U.K. to stay on track to meet its climate goals. The Sixth Carbon Budget spans more than 400 pages and identifies bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) as one of the technologies needed to achieve net zero emissions.
