Midcoast Conservancy and co-sponsor Strong-Hancock Funeral Home will host an online panel discussion of Green Burial and Conservation Cemeteries on Thursday, June 24, from 6 - 8 p.m.
Green burial has sparked an interest among land conservation circles in Maine recently, according to the Conservancy, in a news release. The idea isn’t new interment without concrete vaults, embalming, or unrecyclable components was the way all burials were conducted until a few generations ago. What is new is that land trusts are thinking of green cemeteries as a way of conserving land in perpetuity for gentle multi-use trails, habitat, and green space as well as burials. ....

On some level, we may all have a bit of polytheistic influence. This polytheistic view is our way of understanding a complex concept of Source that shows up in our cultural stories with a variety of faces and purposes. When I was in India, a temple monk shared that Hindus have more than 30,000 gods and goddesses yet believe in one supreme being from which the others emerge. His explanation widened my understanding that one can be both monotheistic and polytheistic. I see polytheism as a valid step on the path of spiritual exploration.Â ....

If a soul is a shard of the great light that animates the body it inhabits during a lifetime, clearly it shines through animals as through humans. What happens after death? I donât know. Time and physical space donât seem to be obstacles to this light. It seems to live on in everyone and everything a being has touched, spreading like ripples, wider and wider. At someoneâs death, I am always struck by the dual nature of it. It seems ordinary. Hereâs a live person (or animal), hereâs a person in transition, beyond life. Not breathing. And yet. an impenetrable mystery. Where is she? Where did he go? How is it that I can, almost physically, feel that I am now carrying some of him/her? ....
