Conservancy seeks teen participants wanting to give nature a WHIRL


Participants will learn about watershed management, aquatic resources and invasive species management.
WHIRL (Water and Habitat on the Indian River Lakes) is a program that started in 2019 as a collaboration between the Indian River Lakes Conservancy, the Indian River Central School District, the Friends of Recreation Conservation and Environmental Stewardship program at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, the Izaak Walton League and the St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management.
This year’s program begins Wednesday, July 14 and meets for a full day every Wednesday through Aug. 25.
Participants can expect to kayak several lakes and learn to assess and improve water quality through nature-based shoreline approaches. They will also participate in a research project to raise and release a Eurasian watermilfoil-eating weevil bug to help control unwanted, invasive plants in the Ind ....

Indian River board discusses proposed solar project


PHILADELPHIA — US Light Energy provided a presentation to the Indian River Board of Education recently regarding a proposed PILOT, payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement, for a community solar facility it is building for the benefit of the Tri-County Energy Cooperative.
On Thursday night, during its regularly scheduled meeting, the board discussed the proposal and questions it would like answered before a decision is made.
In 2017, US Light Energy was selected to construct eight megawatts of solar generating capacity for the benefit of the Tri-County Energy Cooperative and its 29 school district and municipal members. A megawatt is a unit of electrical power equal to one million watts. ....

Indian River school 2021-22 budget proposes slight spending decrease


PHILADELPHIA — During its meeting Thursday evening, the Indian River Central School District Board of Education approved its proposed 2021-22 budget that will represent a slight decrease in spending from this year.
The district has proposed an $89,921,500 spending plan for the 2021-22 school year, an 0.84% or $166,954 decrease from this year’s adjusted budget amount of $90,088,445.
The district’s proposed tax levy to support the total budgeted amount stands at $2,583,574, a 3.04% increase over this year’s $2,507,302.
“Comparing what’s proposed for the 21-22 budget against what the budget is currently, our $90 million budget, you can see that there’s a slight reduction, almost $167,000,” said Indian River Central School District’s Business Manager Audrey Stevenson. “We’re still estimating putting $1.5 million into the ERS (Employee Retirement System) reserve and $.525 million into the TRS (Teachers’ Retirement ....
