Editor’s Note: This is the story of Indiana Harbor Belt EMD GP38-3 3800, as told to Railway Age by IHB Mechanical Superintendent Michael Cunningham. The unit, purchased with a damaged prime-mover, underwent a complete rebuild and upgrade, and received a very special military tribute livery.
“This EMD GP38-3, before it came to the Indiana Harbor Belt, was Norfolk Southern 5274. This locomotive was a full rebuild done by NS in 2018, complete with a new cab. The prime-mover was upgraded to meet EPA Tier 0+ emissions standards. However, NS experienced an engine failure and sold the unit at auction to Metro East Industries (MEI). We purchased it to replace IHB 4015, a GP40 that had wreck damage. MEI provided an engine to replace the one that had failed on the NS. The replacement was overhauled in 2018 as well and meets Tier 0+ emissions standards. MEI requalified all the engine components and installed it in the l ....

WaBTEC’S FLXdrive, designated as a BEL44C4D, is currently being tested as the middle unit in a three-unit consist, placed in between two Wabtec Tier 4 diesel-electrics.
Based on emerging technologies in batteries, hydrogen fuel cells and renewable natural gas, zero-emission motive power is a possibility.
In 2025, the U.S. EPA Tier 5 standard and the European Euro7 standard should come into effect. Both standards limit the emission of harmful substances by trains and locomotives to very low values. In particular, in the Tier 5 standard, in comparison with Tier 4, the value of NOx (oxides of nitrogen) decreases from 1.3 g/dHp-hr to 0.2 g/dHp-hr, and the value of PM (particulate matter) from 0.03 to 0.00. Thus, the standard requires zero PM emissions and almost zero NOx emissions. ....

Metra and Canadian Pacific, along with the CREATE partners, are pleased to announce the completion of the Canadian Pacific Crossover Upgrades project (B1). This project eliminates commuter and freight train delays by installing five crossovers and associated signaling on the Metra tracks serving the Milwaukee District West Line and Canadian Pacific, principally between the grade crossings of Scott Street and Ruby Street. This project also installs a crossover between the Indiana Harbor Belt and CN tracks, located between Chestnut Street and Grand Avenue. A crossover is a pair of switches that connects two parallel rail tracks, enabling a train on one track to cross over to the other. ....
