Butch Cassidy Biographer Visits Sweetwater County Historical Museum

GREEN RIVER Author and biographer Bill Betenson paid a visit to the Sweetwater County Historical Museum in Green River this week.
Betenson is the great-nephew of Robert Leroy Parker – better known as Butch Cassidy, the legendary western outlaw. Betenson has spent decades researching his famous relative and his first book about him, Butch Cassidy, My Uncle was published in 2012.
Betenson’s latest work,
Butch Cassidy: The Wyoming Years, was released last year by High Plains Press. It chronicles Cassidy’s life with special emphasis on his time in Wyoming.

Between 1890 and 1901, when, along with Harry Longabaugh (the Sundance Kid) and Etta Place, Cassidy fled the country for South America, he rustled livestock, served a hitch at the Territorial Prison in Laramie, owned a ranch near Dubois, and robbed banks and trains. ....

The Sweetwater County Historical Museum in Green River recently discovered that it has a unique cultural and historical link to another museum on the other side of the world.

Civil War era rifle researched by museum

A muzzle-loading Civil War infantry rifle was recently brought to the Sweetwater County Historical Museum in Green River for examination and research through the museum’s Vintage Firearms Research Program.
Museum staff determined the rifle to be a very fine .58-caliber Model 1861 Springfield, manufactured in 1862. About 660,000 Model 1861s were produced by Springfield between 1861 and 1865 at a cost of $15 to $20 apiece. A slightly modified successor, the Model 1863, was made in similar quantities from 1863 to 1865.

Seventy-five people took part in a recent Facebook livestreamed event created by the Sweetwater County Historical Museum in Green River.
Amanda Benson, the museum’s curator, took questions across a broad range of topics, including the duties of a curator, genealogical research, the museum’s extensive collection of historical photographs, care and preservation of artifacts, historic documents, and the museum’s volunteer program.
