Billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s chemical group Ineos is donating £100m to Oxford University to fund research into antibiotics-resistant “superbugs”.
The donation from Sir Jim - who is Britain’s fifth-richest person with a £12.5bn fortune - is one of the biggest in the university’s history and will be used to fund antimicrobial research.
Ineos and the university said that 1.5m excess deaths a year are caused by bacterial resistance due to overuse of antibiotics. They said this is arguably the world s biggest economic and healthcare challenge after Covid. ....

A new state of the art institute for antimicrobial research is to open at Oxford University thanks to a £100 million donation from Ineos.
Ineos, one of the world’s largest manufacturing companies, and the University of Oxford are launching a new world-leading institute to combat the growing global issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which currently causes an estimated 1.5 million excess deaths each year- and could cause over 10m deaths per year by 2050. Predicted to also create a global economic toll of $100 trillion by mid-century, it is arguably the greatest economic and healthcare challenge facing the world post-Covid. ....

Oxford research tackles threat of antibiotic resistance

Oxford University is opening a new research institute dedicated to tackling resistance to antibiotics.
The university says this is one of the the biggest rising threats to global health, already causing 1.5 million deaths per year worldwide.
The institute will be funded by £100m donated by the Ineos chemical company.
Vice chancellor Louise Richardson said the Covid pandemic had shown the high cost of ignoring something that is likely to head our way .
Growing menace
There will be 50 researchers working in the new Ineos Oxford Institute for Antimicrobial Resistance, addressing the over-use and mis-use of antibiotics, which the university warned could cause 10 million excess deaths per year by 2050. ....

LONDON: The University of Oxford on Tuesday announced a major 100 million pound donation by British chemicals multinational Ineos to create a world-leading institute to combat the silent pandemic of worldwide resistance to antibiotics.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) currently causes an estimated 1.5 million excess deaths each year and could cause over 10 million deaths per year by 2050 and is predicted to also create a global economic toll of USD 100 trillion by the middle of the century. ....
