Newark Free Lunch Program issues call for help

Newark Free Lunch Program issues call for help
Wayne Post
Before the pandemic, the Newark Free Lunch Program provided over 7,800 meals annually at Emmanuel United Methodist Church. The basement dining room was forced to close last March, so volunteers prepared grab-and-go lunches that were handed out at the door.
The number of lunches given out went up due to unemployment. In the past year, volunteers handed out 22,205 lunches. This included 162 Thanksgiving dinners and 158 Christmas dinners. Mostly adults received meals in the past, but there was an increase in the number of families with children needing lunch during the pandemic.
“This volume has devastated our budget and we need some financial help,” managers Manny and Alice Crespo said. “In the last 28 years, we have never turned anyone away and we do not want to turn anyone away now.”

On Feb. 6, 1971 she married the love of her life, Michael Allen “Mick” McKee who preceded her in death in 2008. McClurg remembered for devotion to Alcoa City Schools

Harry B. “Mickey” McClurg’s name is on Alcoa City Schools’ board room, but his decades of devotion to the district left an impact across the district.
McClurg, who died Dec. 17 at the age of 82, served on the Board of Education for 31 years, nearly 22 as its president.
“Mickey McClurg’s dedication to the Alcoa City Schools was always above and beyond,” Jane Qualls, director of ACS from 1999 to 2004, emailed. “He enthusiastically supported all aspects of our schools — academics, athletics, students, teachers and administrators. He was also very committed to buildings, maintenance and grounds in making Alcoa Campuses positive places to work and learn. Mickey was truly a big man with a big heart!”
