Fairfield police say a 69-year-old man died in a motorcycle crash last night at the Intersection of Route 45 and Highway 15 west of Fairfield. Police say he appeared to be westbound on Highway 15 at approximately 8:50 when he lost control and struck a curb, then a traffic sign. The motorcycle then hit another curb and ejected the operator. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of family. The City of Fairfield, with the assistance of Frontier Community College, has announced a Back to Business Grant workshop later this week. The workshop will be held in Room 24 of Mason Hall from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Fairfield Zoning Officer Flo Simpson will be on hand to assist businesses in submitting their grant applications; the program will begin accepting applications on Wednesday, and it will close October 11th. IHSA reduce summer contact days, set spring State Finals, hear recommendation to update mask requirements


The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors met for its regularly scheduled meeting, which included both virtual and in-person attendance, on Monday, April 12, 2021, where the Board took action on several items, including a reduction in contact days this summer, a three-year membership assessment plan to aid in the IHSA’s economic recovery, and setting several spring State Final dates.
In addition, the Board announced updates from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) regarding masks for students competing in low-risk outdoor sports and activities.
Students competing in low-risk outdoor sports and activities are no longer required to wear masks while competing. In-season IHSA sports and activities impacted by this update include bass fishing, baseball, softball, tennis, and track & field. Students must continue to wear masks in these sports and activities when they are not actively competing (i.e. athletes on the bench). ....

The head of the Illinois High School Association says political pressure may have helped prompt state public health officials and the Pritzker administration to allow basketball and other high-risk sports to resume.
The Bloomington-based IHSA approved a schedule on Wednesday to enable all sports to resume, after the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) shifted to allow high-risk sports to resume in areas where COVID-19 mitigations were relaxed.
 
IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said he urged schools to contact their state legislators “to push the conversation” for weeks when it appeared the state wasn t going to budge. ....

While some businesses are excited by the relaxing of COVID-19 mitigation in their region of Illinois, others stopped following the governor’s rules long ago.
The state’s eleven regions the governor laid out in his reopening plan are in four different classes of COVID-19 mitigations. One Illinois state lawmaker has three COVID-19 regions in his district and they each have different restrictions.
In Springfield, business owner Craig Rhodes was pleasantly surprised when Region 3 leapfrogged from Phase 4 Tier 3 to just Phase 4. That allowed restaurants to go from not allowing indoor dining to having 50 percent capacity. It also allowed Rhodes to instantly open his King Pin Lanes bowling alley with 50 percent capacity. ....
