The government is considering whether to locally produce Covid-19 vaccines with its own funds as the supply of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from India s Serum Institute remains uncertain.
The production will be funded by the Tk 10,000 crore allocated in this year s budget to combat the pandemic.
The government funds will be spent for either locally manufacturing the vaccine with the developers assistance or an arrangement to co-produce with the inventors.
Bangladesh is trying to source vaccines as the country s mass inoculation programme stumbled following India s restriction on export of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine produced by Serum. ....

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has lowered Bangladesh s growth forecast for the current fiscal, with the second wave of Covid-19 posing risks to economic recovery.
The regional lender, however, anticipates a sharp economic recovery in the next financial year, notwithstanding the Covid-19 headwinds. The projections were reflected in the Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2021 report released on Wednesday.
In January this year, the Bangladesh  government revised its gross domestic product (GDP) growth projection for the current fiscal to 7.4 percent from the earlier 8.2 percent, considering the Covid situation in the country. ....

Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Wednesday stated that Bangladesh’s GDP growth rate may be in the range of 5.5 to 6 percent in the current fiscal, which is also quite enviable in the circumstances.
The organization also said the resurgence in Covid-19 cases and delays in availability in the supply of vaccines, both globally and domestically, could undermine the economic growth outlook. Under sustained global recovery and effective Covid -19 management, GDP growth is expected to further strengthen to 7.2% in FY2022.
Presenting the latest Asian Development Bank (ADB) report Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2021, ADB senior economist Soon Chan Hong said ADB will provide $940 million loan to Bangladesh to procure Covid-19 vaccine that’s under process. ....

GDP growth may fall to 5.5-6pc
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has downsized its projection about the Bangladesh s GDP growth in the current fiscal year of 2020-21, considering the second wave of Covid pandemic and fresh lockdown that restricted economic activities.
The ADB in its annual flagship publication titled Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2021 released yesterday had projected that Bangladesh s GDP growth would pick up to 6.8 per cent in 2020-21 with stimulus package implementation and recovery in global growth and trade.
However, ADB Country Director Manmohan Parkash in a virtual press briefing on the launch of the flagship report yesterday said, As the second wave of Covid-19 is ongoing and the situation is still fluid, these impacts were not considered in our outlook. ....

The government approved in principle the local coproduction of Russia s Sputnik V and China s Sinopharm coronavirus vaccines involving Bangladeshi drug makers.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) yesterday approved the proposal made by the health ministry, said Additional Secretary Shahida Akhter of the Cabinet Division told reporters yesterday.
The development came a day after the government authorised the emergency use of Sputnik V and also sought immediate supply from Sinopharm at a meeting with Chinese delegates.
Bangladesh s mass inoculation programme suffered serious setbacks after the Indian government restricted the export of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine produced by the Serum Institute of India. ....
