When Grant Mumby started his battle with esophageal cancer, he began to lose his hair. His grandson, Dawson Mumby, said he would grow his hair long for his grandfather, “Grandpa had really nice hair, I told Grandpa that I would grow my hair and he could have mine so he wouldn’t have to worry about missing his full head of white hair if it fell out during chemo.” ....

As the province experiences its first week of the “emergency brake” shutdown, concerns continue to grow around critical care capacity and pressures on the local healthcare system.
Premier Doug Ford’s comments last week, “We’ve never had more Ontarians in intensive care than we do today,” mirror a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases across the Quinte region. Quinte Health Care Belleville General Hospital is housing a rising number of patients in its regional ICU as infection rates rise daily.

Local women leaves a legacy lift to make cancer care better for everyone

The Belleville General Hospital Foundation received a gift of $75,000 Thursday donated by the late Lisa Martha Simpkins.
She left the donation in her will to the Oncology Department at BGH, as she had a long battle with cancer. Mrs. Simpkins passed away in June 2020 of cancer, having battled it on three occasions, notably breast and lung cancer – she was 91.

Mrs. Simpkins came to Canada in 1952 from Germany, looking for a better life following World War II. She was very grateful for the standard of life she had here, making her way as a nanny before turning to fashion. Her appreciation for quality healthcare lead her to making a will four years ago, where wanted to leave a legacy that would also help others to receive the same care she did.
