A snow-sledding accident left James A. âJimâ Rothrock paralyzed when he was still a teen in Martinsville, but he went on to a long career in state government helping others with disabilities, not just through policy but with his relentless good cheer.
His work, though, was merely an extension of his life.
âJim was a constant fount of unrestrained enthusiasm and boundless optimism,â said his longtime friend Bernie Henderson. âEither he never realized he had some physical restrictions or he just didnât care. Anytime I was discouraged, angry, frustrated or depressed, I called to get a dose of Jim Rothrock, and that never failed. ....

Disability services provider Breakthru Pty Ltd is back-paying employees more than $2.7 million and has entered into an Enforceable Undertaking (EU) with the Fair Work Ombudsman.
The registered charity, which operates in NSW, Victoria and Queensland self-reported underpayments to the workplace regulator in March 2020.
During the process of negotiating a new enterprise agreement, Breakthru became aware that it had incorrectly classified a number of employees under the applicable awards and industrial agreements, resulting in an underpayment of base rates for those employees.
The error led to Breakthru underpaying employee entitlements under the applicable industrial agreements and the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 and the Labour Market Assistance Industry Award 2010. ....

A coalition of more than 20 disability organisations released a statement yesterday setting out significant concerns over the federal government’s plans to introduce independent assessments to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
The government says this new approach is aimed at making the NDIS fairer. But many people with disability think it is about cost-cutting. They also say an independent assessment is a “nightmare” process that doesn’t produce an accurate picture of people’s lives.
If the government is trying to make the NDIS fairer, there are better ways.

To meet criteria for NDIS funding, you need to demonstrate you have a permanent and significant disability. ....
