Kessler team receives funding to study factors leading to osteoarthritis after knee injury
Gerard Malanga, MD, and Nathan Hogaboom, PhD, of Kessler Foundation received a $185,707 award from The Geneva Foundation (Geneva) to study factors contributing to the development of osteoarthritis following acute knee injuries, a common disabling condition among active-duty military personnel.
The funding supports Kessler Foundation s participation as a collaborative partner in Musculoskeletal Injury and Rehabilitation Research for Operational Readiness (MIRROR) headquartered at the Uniformed Services University (USU).
The MIRROR program is managed by Geneva on behalf of USU. MIRROR supports a broad scope of musculoskeletal projects, including this two-year study entitled, MIRROR Collaboration: Chemical and cellular characterization of hemarthroses after traumatic knee injuries in active-duty military personnel. ....

Disabled People Had An Easier Time Voting In 2020, But Millions Still Had Issues: Report
One in nine disabled people reported having trouble voting last year, according to new research. This is an improvement, but a lot of work still needs to be done.
Disabled Americans had less trouble voting in the 2020 elections than in prior years, according to research published last week by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission.
The EAC report shows that the gap between disabled and nondisabled voters who experienced problems while voting has narrowed significantly. In 2020, 11.4% disabled voters reported having problems versus 6.4% of nondisabled voters. This drop is noteworthy in comparison to a similar report conducted in 2012 that found that 26.1% of disabled voters versus 7.4% of nondisabled voters reported having trouble. ....

BANGOR, Maine The Maine Human Rights Commission has sued discount store giant Walmart in federal court over its Skowhegan location’s refusal to allow an employee with an intellectual disability to have a set weekly schedule.
Last May, the commission found that managers violated the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Maine Human Rights Act when they failed to accommodate Michael Morin, 40, of Skowhegan, who has worked at that location for nearly 20 years. ....
