HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - This is Edward Gaines’ 11th year volunteering in the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign.
Gaines says bell ringing is his way of giving back to the non-profit that saved him.
“I’m an ex-alcoholic, ex-drug addict, ex-cocaine user and I found myself in the gutter in Harlem and the only way for me was through the Salvation Army,” said Gaines.
Maj. Jeff Martin, divisional commander of the Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders Division, said Gaines is an example of “what the Salvation Army tries to do for men and women.” ....

Bellringing veteran raises more than $200,000 in 20 years


Johnston just completed his 20th season ringing the bell.
Major David Worthy says Johnston has spent at least 6,000 hours at the red kettle, raising more than $200,000 over two decades.
He is an absolute inspiration to us. We love Jamie. He s one of our own. The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign would not be what it is in the South Plains without Jamie, Worthy said.
He provides more hours than any other individual or group in our area.
This season alone, his kettle has raised more than $15,000.
He really, truly is a life-changer to people in need, Worthy praised.
Despite having cerebral palsy and being confined to a wheelchair, Johnston rings the bell full-time throughout the season. ....

Leesburg Town Council helps Salvation Army raise funds during pandemic


Members of the Leesburg Town Council raised more than $1,300 in their friendly Red Kettle Campaign competition, where they took part in the Salvation Army’s annual holiday fundraiser.
Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk and Vice Mayor Fernando “Marty” Martinez, along with council member Neil Steinberg and incoming council members Kari Nacy and Zach Cummings, helped collect donations at the Leesburg Safeway and Giant grocery stores.
Funds raised from the Salvation Army’s “Red Kettle Campaign” go to serve Loudoun County residents throughout the year. The group provides emergency assistance year-round, including food and clothing and help paying rent and utility bills. ....

Pandemic or not, farming never stops. And with that in mind, a local company is giving back.
AGRIS Co-operative is making a $10,000 donation to the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign in Essex, Chatham-Kent, Elgin, Middlesex, and Lambton Counties.
Jim Anderson, AGRIS ownership committee chair says this year especially, they knew people were having a tough time.
“The board did not hesitate when wanting to give back to the communities where we farm, work and raise our families. This year especially because of COVID-19, we knew people were having a tough time, and we wanted to help.”
AGRIS Co-op, despite the pandemic, had a good year. In March the company was ready with warehouses full of the products needed for farmers to get seeds into the ground. ....
