The Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education released new guidance Tuesday to help schools get ready to return to in-person learning next month.
A memo from Elementary and Secondary Commissioner Jeffrey Riley lays out a timeline for when Massachusetts schools will be required to return to full-time, classroom learning, setting the expectation that middle and elementary schoolers will be back in classrooms in April.

When Will Massachusetts Schools Return to Classroom Learning? New Massachusetts School Guidelines Released – NBC Boston


The education commissioner of Massachusetts can soon require in-person learning.
Elementary school phase (grades K-5): For elementary schools, hybrid and remote learning models will no longer count towards meeting the required student learning time hours as of Monday, April 5, 2021. As a result, districts and schools are required to shift their learning model for elementary school grade levels to full-time, in-person instruction five days per week effective Monday, April 5, 2021.  
Middle school phase (grades 6-8): For middle schools, hybrid and remote learning models will no longer count towards meeting the required student learning time hours as of Wednesday, April 28, 2021. As a result, districts and schools will be required to shift their learning model for middle school grade levels to full-time, in-person instruction five days per week, effective Wednesday, April 28, 2021. ....

Mass. Education Officials Release Guidance on When Students Will Return to Classroom

New Remote/Hybrid Learning Rules Take Effect Tuesday in Massachusetts – NBC Boston


Districts and schools using a hybrid model will have to provide at least 35 hours of live instruction a combination of in-person and synchronous remote teaching over a 10-school day period.
Elementary and Secondary Commissioner Jeffrey Riley said the new regulations are aimed at addressing the isolation and disconnection caused by the COVID-19 pandemic that are driving a youth mental health crisis.
The amendments were approved Dec. 15 by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education on an emergency basis, and Riley said he plans to bring them back to the board for final adoption in February after a public comment period. ....
