St. Landry Parish School Board receives $50,000 grant to help high school students earn a degree

BATON ROUGE, La. — The Louisiana Department of Education announced Wednesday that St. Landry Parish was among eight school systems to receive a $50,000 Fast Forward regional planning grant to help increase the number of high school graduates who earn an associate s degree or apprenticeship before graduation.
According to a release from LDOE, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education approved the allocations Wednesday during its March meeting.
In January, LDOE released a request for applications to support the development of new student pathways as part of its Fast Forward initiative, the release states. ....

The Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education released new guidance Tuesday to help schools get ready to return to in-person learning next month.
A memo from Elementary and Secondary Commissioner Jeffrey Riley lays out a timeline for when Massachusetts schools will be required to return to full-time, classroom learning, setting the expectation that middle and elementary schoolers will be back in classrooms in April.

The education commissioner of Massachusetts can soon require in-person learning.
Elementary school phase (grades K-5): For elementary schools, hybrid and remote learning models will no longer count towards meeting the required student learning time hours as of Monday, April 5, 2021. As a result, districts and schools are required to shift their learning model for elementary school grade levels to full-time, in-person instruction five days per week effective Monday, April 5, 2021.  
Middle school phase (grades 6-8): For middle schools, hybrid and remote learning models will no longer count towards meeting the required student learning time hours as of Wednesday, April 28, 2021. As a result, districts and schools will be required to shift their learning model for middle school grade levels to full-time, in-person instruction five days per week, effective Wednesday, April 28, 2021. ....

State education board empowers commissioner to force schools to fully reopen


An 8-3 vote by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education on Friday afternoon cleared the way for the state’s education commissioner to eventually take remote and hybrid learning models off the table for local school districts.
The board approved emergency regulations giving Commissioner Jeff Riley the authority to decide when full and partial remote schooling will no longer count toward student learning time requirements, taking a step towards the next phase of pandemic-era schooling in Massachusetts.
“We are at an interesting time. We have seen our numbers go way down,” Riley said. “We’ve seen the vaccines and the promise of the vaccines go way up, and we think now is the time to begin to move our children back to school more robustly. The medical community believes that, and I think now is the time to make that call.” ....
