Out of 30 people who suffered blood clots after receiving the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, seven have died, the UK medical regulator said Saturday.
The British acknowledgement of deaths comes as several European countries have paused the use of the AstraZeneca jab over a potential link to blood clots.
The UK s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said in a statement that Out of the 30 reports up to and including 24 March, sadly 7 have died.
The Netherlands on Friday halted vaccinations with the AstraZeneca jab for people under the age of 60 after five new cases among women, one of whom died. ....

New approach to CAR T gene therapy yields efficient and longer-lasting response against HIV

New approach to CAR T gene therapy yields efficient and longer-lasting response against HIV
Findings
A UCLA research team has shown that using a truncated form of the CD4 molecule as part of a gene therapy to combat HIV yielded superior and longer-lasting results in mouse models than previous similar therapies using the CD4 molecule.
This new approach to CAR T gene therapy a type of immunotherapy that involves genetically engineering the body s own blood-forming stem cells to create HIV-fighting T cells has the potential to not only destroy HIV-infected cells but to create memory cells that could provide lifelong protection from infection with the virus that causes AIDS. ....

Texas blood donations down due to pandemic
Carter Blood Supply in need of donations
By Bob Hallmark | April 1, 2021 at 6:47 PM CDT - Updated April 1 at 9:51 PM
TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Texas blood supply and donations are down, mostly because of COVID-19, but those numbers are actually up in one East Texas city.
In Longview, officials at Carter Bloodcare tell us they saw a 50 percent increase in walk-in donations over the past year. However, they say that does not make up for the current need for blood.
“If there’s blood not on the shelf, those medical procedures and medical miracles can’t happen so, those miracles that our doctors are working on every single day rely on a steady blood supply to be there. We’re on a one day supply, in normal years we’d be at a three to five day supply right now,” said Carter Bloodcare director of operations in Tyler Clinton McCoy. ....

HCAs are a promising risk indicator of type 2 diabetes

HCAs are a promising risk indicator of type 2 diabetes
A series of studies led by researchers from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) have revealed that hyocholic acid and its derivatives (collectively known as HCAs), a component of bile acids that facilitate fat digestion, are a promising risk indicator of type 2 diabetes. The strong efficacy of HCAs in regulating blood glucose levels and protecting against diabetes has also been uncovered. The findings open a window for the development of HCA-based predictive markers as well as anti-diabetic drugs.
The research results have been published in the international scientific journals
