PITTSBURGH (AP) â Two Lake Erie lighthouses have reopened for tours, and the reward for climbing their circular staircases is a clear view of ships gliding through shimmering blue water.
Since the 1800s, the Presque Isle Light Station in Presque Isle State Park and the Erie Land Lighthouse on this cityâs east side have beamed light up to 15 miles across the water, allowing ship and boat captains to navigate, find a channel and get safely to shore.
For centuries, a long beam of constant light was a captainâs only hope for finding safe harbor in fog-shrouded waters at night. ....

A 7-mile peninsula juts out into Lake Erie from the city of Erie, forming a magnificent natural harbor called Presque Isle Bay. Today, two active lighthouses protect the ships plying Lake Erie. The North Pierhead Lighthouse is one of them.
When visitors come to Presque Isle State Park, they have favorite places they usually visit. Beach 6, Waterworks, Kite Beach, Presque Isle Lighthouse and Beach 11 are a few. Many visitors do not even know about the park s hidden unique jewels tucked away on the U.S. Coast Guard Station and the North Pier road.
From the beginning of travel on the Great Lakes, storms have ravaged boaters and commerce on the lakes, and taken lives and vessels. The lake is known for its unpredictable gales, blizzards, fog banks and thunderstorms that can overwhelm the lake without warning.
