Washington State College was a collection of a dozen buildings on a hillside in Pullman, home to less than 900 students. But for one night in 1913, the campus was buzzing with activity.
Booker T. Washington was in town. College Hall was packed to the brim, with folks outside clamoring to get in.
Washington was born into slavery in Virginia and rose to prominence at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, where he earned international acclaim for his practical approach to education. Washington toured the Northwest that year, visiting cities and towns in Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon. He spoke of the educational innovation he had introduced at the Tuskegee Institute, where he worked from 1881 until he died in 1915. Washington emphasized the importance of education in crafts and industrial skills, and was, by one account, thoroughly impressed with WSC’s campus, faculty, and staff. ....

Dorothy J. Wilson, 91 of Marshalltown, IA, went home to the Lord on Saturday, April 3, 2021.
Dorothy Jean Bartine was born in Marshalltown, IA, on January 14, 1930, the only child of John and Golda (Achtemeier) Bartine. She graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1948 and worked as a dental assistant for Dr. D.A. and David Collison for six years.
Dorothy was united in marriage to Rolland (Ron) Wilson on September 25, 1949, and they have always made their home in Marshalltown.
Dorothy was a member of First Presbyterian Church, PEO Chapter JU, Twentieth Century Club, and Bridge Club. She was a former member and President of Early American Glass Club, Christian Women’s Club, and Entre Nous, and was Area Representative for Stonecroft Ministries. She very much enjoyed spending time with her friends and serving others. ....

Pilcrow Adds Shelves To Hansford County Library

Hansford
County Library is pleased to announce the addition of more than 65 items to the
shelves thanks to a cooperative grant with Spearman’s Twentieth Century Club
and The Pilcrow Foundation of Cottage Grove, Oregon.
 
 
It
was the staff’s intention to have these books on the shelves before Christmas,
but Covid-19 complications delayed that. 
Now ready for check out, this addition will appeal to the easy and
junior fiction reader, with a number of items falling in the nonfiction area.

Guest speaker at the November meeting of the Historical Society was Donnie Parker, World War II Vet. He shared his experience on the “Honor Flight” to Washington D. C.
There was a photo display for Veterans Day at the Union Springs Pharmacy featuring CW4 Jackie Gaston, veteran of the 1990-1991 Persian Gulf war.
The “Wheels” sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Union Springs took local people on the “Christmas Tour of Homes” in Eufaula, Saturday, December 4, 2010. Fourteen rode in two vehicles driven by Sally Hall and Howard Hall.

American National Bank has its 1996 calendar printed and it is a brite lite. The theme of the calendar is “Working Together To Build A Better Community.” A poster contest of grade one through six was held and the winning posters have been used for the calendar pages.
