For the third straight year running Metro-East Lutheran High School’s orchestra has claimed first place in the Illinois High School Association’s solo and ensemble competition.
EDWARDSVILLE – For the third year running, Metro-East Lutheran High School’s orchestra took first place in the Illinois High School Association’s 2021 solo and ensemble competition.
MELHS has now earned the No. 1 ranking for its division every year since the school launched its orchestra program in 2018.
“We are blessed to have really talented musicians among our student body, and I’m so glad they still had opportunities to use their talents and make music during this unusual year,” said Karen Shimkus, music teacher at MELHS. ....

U-46's 'Accent on Achievement' to honor students named All-State Musicians

Twelve high school students will be recognized by the Elgin Area School District U-46 board Monday with an Accent on Achievement for their outstanding achievements as musicians, including a student whose original musical composition was honored at the state level.
Students participated in the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) competitive audition process to be named All-State Musicians, the highest musical achievement for high schoolers in Illinois.

These students are all-star musicians and their participation in this prestigious event reflects their dedication and skills as well as the support of their families and U-46 music educators, said Superintendent Tony Sanders. Parents, teachers and these students have showcased their resilience and innovation as they pivoted to producing and supporting virtual performances and employing new technology in the process. ....

ALTON Alton Symphony Orchestra continues its virtual concert series, this time while also highlighting the latest Marie Stillwell Young Artists’ Competition first place-winner, Isabella Saldaña.
Maestro Wm. Shane Williams has kept the 76th season of the symphony on track with concerts that people can enjoy from the comfort and safety of their own home. Williams has created new concerts using pre-recorded selections from past performances.
The next one in the season’s offerings, “The Warmth of Music” will be available on the orchestra’s website, https://www.altonsymphonyorchestra.org/, on Sunday, Feb. 21. ....

EDWARDSVILLE Despite an odd year and new way of auditioning, 21 musicians at Edwardsville High School have been chosen as Illinois Music Education Association’s 2020 all-state.
“I have been amazed by how the students have kept music alive. With all the changes, they are being fluid,” EHS orchestra director Victoria Voumard said. “They have stayed motivated and continue to work hard through all of this.”
Of the 21 students are five band members, seven choir members and nine orchestra members.
Each year, EHS musicians audition for ILMEA and their all-state honors. Those auditions are usually conducted in person but due to COVID-19, students were asked to make a YouTube video of themselves performing. For some, the new setting stirred fewer nerves. ....

Congratulations to Evergreen Park Community High School junior Matthew Summers who has been chosen to participate in the 2021 ILMEA (Illinois Music Education Association) All-State Honors Chorus! Students from across the state were selected through an audition process as a representation of the best musicians in each of the nine Illinois Music Education Association districts. Matt will participate in the Illinois Music Education Conference January 27-30, 2020 in Peoria, Illinois
