DeKALB The award-winning “Swept Under the Rug” exhibit returned to the Pick Museum of Anthropology. The exhibit, which received the “2020 Award of Superior Achievement” from the Illinois Association of Museums, will be showing throughout April.
Curated by Safe Passage, DeKalb County’s domestic violence and sexual assault crisis center, “Swept Under the Rug” aims to shine a light on the widespread impact of sexual violence on survivors within the local community, in the hopes of creating a space for conversations, according to the exhibitions information page. This offers a sobering yet necessary look at an often unspoken issue.  ....

Normal Council Hears Update on Weekend Catastrophes


The Normal Town Council meets remotely, Monday, Feb. 15, 2021.
The Normal Town Council on Monday night heard updates about this weekend’s train derailment and fires, including that specialized equipment should arrive Tuesday to transport debris.
Also at the remote meeting, the council awarded Stark Excavating an $863,000 contract to complete a culvert project on Gregory Street; OK d spending $365,000 on a Maxwell Park update; and renewed a  contract for City Manager Pam Reece. 
Normal Police Chief Rick Bleichner and Fire Chief Mick Humer attended the meeting to share updates on the weekend events: Early Saturday morning when 16 cars of a 100-plus car freight train derailed in Uptown; that afternoon, a fire destroyed 12 units at Sugar Creek Apartments on Linden Street. But the weekend wasn’t over: Two overturned trailers from the derailment caught fire Sunday, when a saddle tank for diesel fuel ruptured. It flared again Monday morning. ....

Statement on the Violence at the US Capitol


Dear Museum Community,
The violence and chaos that ensued in our nation’s capital on January 6 was horrifying and reprehensible, and a clear attack on our democracy and society propagated by deliberate deception and misinformation from elected officials. On a day that the United States recorded the most COVID-19 deaths in a single day so far, rioters invaded the U.S. Capitol building in an effort to overturn the unambiguous results of our presidential election resulting in the additional tragic loss of lives.
Museums serve millions of people of all backgrounds and political persuasions in communities across the country, who cast their vote on Election Day. Regardless of whom their ballots favored, our support for the democratic process and the peaceful transition of power must be unequivocal. ....
