DeKALB The award-winning “Swept Under the Rug” exhibit returned to the Pick Museum of Anthropology. The exhibit, which received the “2020 Award of Superior Achievement” from the Illinois Association of Museums, will be showing throughout April.
Curated by Safe Passage, DeKalb County’s domestic violence and sexual assault crisis center, “Swept Under the Rug” aims to shine a light on the widespread impact of sexual violence on survivors within the local community, in the hopes of creating a space for conversations, according to the exhibitions information page. This offers a sobering yet necessary look at an often unspoken issue.  ....

'Hateful Things' exhibit located at Pick Museum of Anthropology provides eye-opening experience


The traveling Hateful Things Exhibit from the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia at Ferris State University opened up at the Pick Museum of Anthropology on Monday and will be open until April 9. 
The exhibit displays some of the most hateful and racist items imaginable aimed at Black people  in America’s history. Hateful Things is an eye-opening experience that reminds its visitors that most of these items weren’t from that long ago in American history, and society as a whole has the power to make our country a better and more accepting place. 
The exhibit opens up tackling hateful advertising that ranges from the 1800s to the 1900s. Many of the companies marketed their products using stereotypical images and anti-Black racial slurs,including mainstream products like Aunt Jemima, Cream of Wheat and Uncle Ben’s who have since updated their branding. Other brands like Darkie Toothpaste and C n Chicken Inn took damaging stereotypes to a national and vile level.  ....

Museum Curator Says 'Americans Like History That Can Be Celebrated At Picnics' - Not The Bad Stuff

Aunt Jemima on a pancake box, board games, books and other racist items are some of the objects that can be seen in the “Hateful Things” exhibition at NIU’s Pick Museum of Anthropology.
Rachelle Wilson, the curator of the museum, said the organization has a social justice-driven mission and the events that happened over the summer show that racism needs to be talked about in the community.
“These are issues that we re facing every single day, and we should be a part of those conversations and bringing this particular exhibit in is opening the doors for those conversations,” Wilson said. “In a way that is almost a safe space for that dialogue to be happening.” ....
