Why Yo-Yo Ma thinks culture and music can help protect the planet

On a sunlit February morning in Cape Town, Ross Frylinck waited near the doorway of a private home perched on a steep mountainside overlooking False Bay. Co-founder of the Sea Change Project, an environmental organization dedicated to preserving the kelp forest in South Africa’s coastal waters, Frylinck had gathered with a group of colleagues and musicians to welcome Yo-Yo Ma to Cape Town, one of 36 stops on the cellist’s six-continent tour known as the Bach Project. ....

Musician Aoife O'Donovan builds musical foundation — and more — in Berkshires


Aoife O’Donovan might have grown up in Boston, but these days, the singer/songwriter is feeling a strong passion for Western Massachusetts, too.
“The Berkshires, when you’re from Eastern Mass., I think the Berkshires are these magical hills to the west,” said O’Donovan, speaking from Florida. “You get on the ‘Pike and you drive until almost the end and you’re just kind of on a different planet.
“I love the access to nature that the Berkshires offer. I love all the incredible trails and mountains. But, culturally, Tanglewood, Jacob’s Pillow, Hancock-Shaker Village, Mass MoCA up in North Adams. There’s not really any other place in America, a region with so much access to nature that has so much to offer culturally.” ....
