It was turned into an official holiday in the early 17th century to celebrate Christianity coming to Ireland. In fact the whole St. Patty drove the snakes out of Ireland was an allegory against the druids back then. Since then, the holiday has become very commercialized, dealing with food, drinks, pinching and the color green.
