Joanna Majoko is one of the participants in this year’s Searchlight competition - the former Hapnot Collegiate student, now a professional jazz singer in Toronto, entered with the song “Where You Are”. Majoko moved with her family from Germany to Zimbabwe to South Africa to Manitoba in her childhood, living in Flin Flon and Thompson before embarking on her musical career. Majoko is now a vocalist, composer and bandleader in Toronto and just released her first EP, No Holding Back, in March. No artists currently based in Flin Flon are taking part in this year’s Searchlight competition, but two Manitoba acts have entered with songs written about Flin Flon and parts of its history. ....
FOLLOWING the deeply concerning and disappointing result in the Hartlepool by-election for Labour last week it is of paramount importance that the party learns from its mistakes and swift and widespread changes are made to halt the rapidly occurring Pasokification threatening to wipe out the Labour Party altogether. At No Holding Back we believe these mistakes are largely twofold the imposition of an outsider candidate with no consultation or engagement with the local party members in Hartlepool and a fundamental lack of a vision for the future that can inspire and enthuse voters to support Labour. The Labour Party has lost a basic connection with its roots over the past few decades as a party that will give the working people of this country a voice and a radical alternative to the neoliberal tide that offers real meaningful change to empower them and their communities. ....
By Adam Feibel Sean Story Leading artists and organizations were celebrated for their work in creating and promoting art and culture in this year’s edition of the Toronto Arts Foundation‘s annual awards. The winner of the award for emerging jazz artist in 2021 was vocalist, composer and bandleader Joanna Majoko. “I just want to thank you all so much. I did not expect this to happen,” Majoko said. “Thank you to my nominator. Thank you for believing in me.” Over the years, Majoko has earned a reputation as one of Canada’s most exciting young singers, sharing the stage with artists such as Jane Bunnett, Larnell Lewis and David Clayton-Thomas. She has performed at some of the world’s biggest festivals, including the Montreal Jazz Festival. ....
