Launch of the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2021 The 23rd Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award, one of the largest and most prestigious awards for young poets aged 11-17 writing original works in English, opens today for entries from young writers aged 11-17. Run by The Poetry Society, with the generous support of the Foyle Foundation, the competition invites entries from both individual poets and schools anywhere in the world. All entries are free and poems can be on any theme, and of any length. The deadline is 31 July 2021. This year’s judges are poets Clare Pollard and Yomi Ṣode, who will read the poems submitted and discover the next generation of brilliant poets. To support entrants, they have recorded a video to detail what they’ll be looking for during the judging process alongside judges’ blogs here and here. ....
‘The Weariness, the Fever and the Fret’: Writing Illness, Health and John Keats In honour of Keats200, the bicentenary celebration of the poet John Keats’s life, works, and legacy, poet Amy Mackelden has set us a new challenge. She offers writing prompts and poems that explore illness, and use our bodies as inspiration. The challenge: write a poem inspired by John Keats, illness poetry, and the pandemic John Keats was born in London in 1795, and in his short life made a huge impact on English poetry. He was a brilliant writer of odes, sonnets and long romances. Unlike many of the other celebrated poets of this period, he did not have a formal literary education and was even scorned for his Cockney roots. After training in the medical profession, Keats contracted tuberculosis and died at the young age of 25. ....

More than one hundred young people from India to the USA teamed up and submitted poems, videos, songs, collages, zines and more to the challenge. Inspired by the warm rhetoric and assured stage presence of US Presidential Inauguration poet, 22-year old Amanda Gorman, Jade Cuttle writing in The Times has drawn up a new reading list of talented poets aged 22 or under, many of whom have emerged through The Poetry Society’s talent development schemes.
